Oud is the common name for an exquisitely fragranced exotic incense which come from the tar-like resinous heartwood from the Aloewood tree that forms in the ancient Aquilaria and some Gyrinops species of trees that are native to the dense forests of South East Asia. The heartwood of the tree produces this dark aromatic resin as part of its natural defence mechanism when infected with fungus (Phialophora Parasitica). It is this resinous heartwood that is known as, oudh and prized due to its rarity and the distinct and unique aroma it produces. It is used primarily in the Middle East, Asia, West and Northeast Africa. It is recently been incorporated into luxury perfume manufactures in the creation of colognes and perfumes.
